"A lot of men in particular, their identity is in their occupation. Once they retire, they lose a lot of social connection associated with their profession, and this can lead to isolation. This was the original premise of the Men's Shed."
This week we are unveiling the work and purpose of Men's Shed Cairns, through the voices of two of its members, Eric and Clive.
Men's shed is a community-focussed organisation that promotes positive male wellbeing, particularly amongst elder generations of men.
I spoke with Eric and Clive about the history and purpose of Men's shed, as well as the activities available to blokes in the Cairns wing of the organisation. We also spoke about how isolation, loneliness, and loss of purpose can brew in the lives of men upon their retirement, and how Men's Shed attempts to ameliorate this.
Eric and Clive have a great sense of humour, and they were a delight to speak with.
