Mental Health & Anxiety with Darilyn Bixenman, MA LPC

Listen Later

(CW) For Mental Health Awareness month, I interview various helping professionals to discuss mental health in certain contexts. Today's episode is joined by Darilyn Bixenman, a licensed professional counselor who worked with Columbine High School students in 1999 after the mass shooting. In her practice, she finds that young people today have more anxiety and less resilience than Columbine survivors.

We discuss theories for increased anxiety, including one from Jonathan Haidt's The Anxious Generation, social media, constant & instantaneous information, PTSD, self-efficacy, spirituality, and more through the lens of the Catholic faith.

Darilyn Bixenman is a native Coloradan, married with three children. She has served in the counseling psychology field since 1993. Over the past 20+ years, she has worked in a variety of fields including adoption, HIV/AIDS, Emergency Mental Health, Community Mental Health and Private Practice. Darilyn also taught various psychology courses for ten years at Community College of Denver. Currently, Darilyn has a private, Catholic psychotherapy practice in Littleton where she specializes in treating women and issues directly related to women’s health. Her research has rooted itself in the arenas of depression and anxiety/trauma particularly in the underserved female population.
