Mentoring: The Experience of Mentoring for Low-Income Single Mothers in the United Kingdom with Heidi Thomas and Dr Lindsay Foreman

Listen Later

Welcome to the EMCC UK Podcast, and welcome to this episode on the experience of mentoring for low-income single mothers in the UK.

In this episode of the podcast, our host Dr Lindsay Foreman speaks to Heidi Thomas. Heidi is a single mother. She holds a Masters in Coaching and Mentoring, is an EMCC Senior Practitioner coach and is in the process of creating a peer mentoring programme for single parents.

During this discussion Heidi and Lindsay explore the mentoring experiences of low-income single mothers in the UK, revealing challenges in balancing work, childcare, and societal pressures. Heidi's research highlights inadequate mentorship tailored to the needs of single mothers and the exploitation of vulnerabilities by some mentors. Despite struggles, success stories emerge, especially with mentoring from women sharing similar experiences. Proposed solutions include improved mentor contracting and ethics, a greater understanding of the mental health challenges these women face, advocating for better understanding and de-stigmatisation of flexible work arrangements, and establishing peer-to-peer mentoring programs.

This is such a great discussion on a very important topic, and we hope you enjoy it.

Dr Lindsay Foreman has been an executive coach and corporate consultant since 2008 and holds an MSc in Applied Positive Psychology and Coaching Psychology. Lindsay completed her doctorate exploring the thoughts and emotions associated with goal achievement revealing that self-doubt, anxiety and overwhelm are a normal and natural part of the goal pursuit process, and that combined with thoughts such as "I can do it" and "I enjoy a challenge” springboard states for success can be created.
