Mercedes Williamson's tragic and brutal murder was the first to be charged and prosecuted under the Federal Hate Crimes Prevention Act, also known as the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Act. Jeff Sessions was the Attorney General who handed down the conviction in this case. Mercedes Williamson was white. Her family refused to collect her remains.
