Meridian's Spring Spirit: Giving, Sports, and Community Pride

Listen Later

Meridian is buzzing with spring energy and local pride as May kicks off. Yesterday wrapped up Idaho Gives, the annual drive to support local nonprofits. From April 28 through May 1, residents, businesses, and organizations joined together in a show of community spirit, raising funds for everything from meal programs for seniors to youth enrichment and arts organizations. The generosity on display continues to make Meridian a wonderful place to live and work.

Today’s weather is doing its best to keep spirits high, offering clear skies and comfortable May temps. The high today is expected to reach 82 with plenty of sunshine, while Saturday will be a touch cooler at 77. Morning runners and outdoor enthusiasts are in luck, as air quality is good across the Treasure Valley. However, if you have allergies, take note: pollen counts are riding high, with tree and grass pollens making their presence felt. Keep those tissues handy and consider limiting outdoor time during the midday peak if you’re sensitive.

Sports fans had much to cheer for. Meridian High’s baseball team closed out a hard-fought game last night, clinching a 5-3 win over Mountain View. Standout pitcher Jake Miller held the Mavericks to just two hits over six innings, while sophomore hitter Sophia Tran hit a home run, electrifying the crowd. Elsewhere, local track and field athletes prepped for district meets coming up next week, and the Meridian Warriors girls’ tennis squad pulled off a tight 4-3 win over Rocky Mountain.

Community news includes garden prep season and a reminder that the Boise National Forest is prepping for the Deer Point Stewardship Project, a 1,300-acre forest health initiative. Residents are reminded that fire safety season is approaching. City crews are also out repairing a few roads—expect some minor detours this weekend.

In local government, keep an eye out for the upcoming Board of Education meeting today, with big topics on the agenda like college tuition hikes and resource planning.

So as the weekend nears, whether you’re cheering on our teams, preparing your garden, or just enjoying the good air and sunshine, Meridian is showing once again why it’s the heart of the Treasure Valley.
