A 38-year-old man, Amamudidin, was murdered in a random stabbing attack on the main street of Merrylands, allegedly by Setefano Leaaetoa who had escaped from Cumberland Hospital's mental health ward 10 days earlier. The incident was one of three deaths linked to security breaches at the hospital within 24 hours, including another escapee who killed two women in a car crash after a police chase. Staff at Cumberland Hospital, one of Australia's largest mental health facilities, have been raising concerns for years about inadequate security, with only three guards on duty at a time for the entire precinct.
