We consider a familiar story, that of the “rich young ruler.” This is the man who came to Jesus asking what else he needed to do to gain eternal life. Jesus’s answer was too much for the young man, and he walked away. We examine this interesting conversation, and then the follow-up exchange that takes place between Jesus and His disciples. We will be in Mark 10:17-31. The last thing that Jesus says in this passage is the first explicit statement of a theme found often in the gospel accounts, “many who are first will be last, and the last, first.
