⚾ Mets Prospect Rankings and the Freddy Peralta Blockbuster

Listen Later

The New York Mets farm system underwent a dramatic transformation leading into the 2026 season. While the organization has long been known for its deep pool of position players, a major shift in strategy and player development has turned the spotlight onto an elite group of pitchers. The defining moment of this transition was the January 2026 blockbuster trade with the Milwaukee Brewers. In this deal, the Mets acquired two-time All-Star Freddy Peralta and reliever Tobias Myers. To secure this frontline talent, David Stearns and the Mets front office had to part ways with two of their most prized prospects: shortstop Jett Williams and right-handed pitcher Brandon Sproat. Even after losing these top-tier talents, the Mets still boast six players in the Baseball America Top 100, signaling a system that remains deep and dangerous. The undisputed jewel of the system is Nolan McLean. Ranked as the number eight prospect in baseball, McLean is a rare success story of mid-season adjustment. In July 2025, he underwent a total overhaul of his pitching mechanics and repertoire, revamping his release points and pitch shapes. The results were staggering. McLean finished the 2025 season just two innings shy of graduating from prospect status, posting a 2.06 ERA over 48 innings in the major leagues. Scouts have raved about his 70-grade sweeper, which is complemented by a 60-grade fastball and curveball. Because he stayed under the rookie limit, he remains eligible for the Prospect Promotion Incentive, and the Mets expect him to be a cornerstone of their Opening Day rotation in 2026.Following closely behind is Carson Benge, an outfielder ranked 19th overall. Benge is a classic five-tool player who destroyed High-A and Double-A pitching in 2025, recording a .281 average and an impressive .385 on-base percentage. Despite a minor hand injury that slowed his progress in Triple-A, his underlying metrics remained elite. The Mets recent acquisition of Luis Robert Jr. might push Benge to left field, but his 65-grade arm and versatility make him an asset anywhere in the grass. David Stearns has confirmed that Benge will have every opportunity to win a starting job during spring training, as the team looks to integrate his high-contact bat into the major league lineup. On the pitching side, Jonah Tong has emerged as a high-ceiling phenomenon. Named the 2025 Minor League Pitcher of the Year by Baseball America, Tong led all of professional baseball with 179 strikeouts and a 1.43 ERA across 113.2 innings. Tong is known for a unique, overhand delivery inspired by Tim Lincecum, which produces incredible vertical ride on his 94-97 mph fastball, often exceeding 19 inches of induced vertical break. While he struggled in a brief major league cameo—largely due to two outlier starts where he surrendered 11 runs—his potential as a number three starter is undeniable if he can refine his newly developed curveball and slider.Another name surging up the rankings is A.J. Ewing, currently sitting at 83rd. Ewing has become a helium prospect thanks to his elite contact rates and swing decisions. In 2025, he climbed three levels to reach Double-A, slashing .315/.401/.429. He is viewed as a future plus defender in center field or at second base, utilizing 65-grade speed to impact the game on both sides of the ball. His approach favors contact over raw power, making him a perfect high-floor table-setter for the Mets future. The system depth extends to players like Jack Wenninger and Edward Lantigua. Wenninger, a sixth-round pick from 2023, proved to be a sleeper hit after posting a 3.12 ERA in High-A. He features a deceptive four-seam fastball with significant vertical break and a high-whiff curveball. Meanwhile, in the lower levels, 18-year-old Edward Lantigua is showing massive raw power. Despite his youth, Lantigua has already recorded exit velocities of 110 mph, suggesting he could develop into a premier power-hitting outfielder as his frame fills out.
