Wes Johnson, a former NCAA Division I swimmer and one of the top paratriathlon coaches in the United States, discusses the psychological trauma he experienced after two concussions. Wes talks about his depression, loss of focus, feelings of insecurity, and a decreased interest in coaching in the aftermath of his concussions. He suggests that speaking with a high-performance coach that shared her own vulnerabilities, helped him realize that “he wasn’t alone” and to normalize his feelings and doubts. Wes discusses some of the lessons he learned which he applies in his work as a coach. One important lesson was the value of being clear on ‘why’ one wants to pursue a goal, such as returning to sport from injury.
