Miami Dolphins 2020 Season Preview - SYE Quick Hits #11

Has there ever been a team in NFL history that was as polarizing as the 2019 Miami Dolphins!? No, like seriously? They began the season dropping their first 7 games, literally losing their first 4 games by the combine score of 163 - 26…. YIKES! Everyone instantly peg this season as the “Tanking for Tua” sweepstakes. Disgruntled players requested trades to different franchises, including sophomore star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick (Traded to Pittsburgh) and running back Kenyan Drake (Traded to Arizona). It was suggested that rookie Head Coach Brian Flores was in over his head and had lost this team. Any and every major sports media network push the notion that this was perhaps the worst football team to ever grace an NFL field. Needless to say, things weren’t so sunny in South Beach…
But then, something in this team clicked during the 2nd half of the 2019 season . This same Miami Dolphin’s squad, which was pretty much a sure victory on majority of teams schedules, weren’t so easy to beat during November and December. During that span, the Fins’ went a very respectable 5 - 4 to close out the 2019 season; a record that included victories over the Indianapolis Colts, the Philadelphia Eagles and a week 17 sweet sweet victory over hated rival, The New England Patriots (Which knocked NE from a playoff bye). Brain Flores proved to be an excellent leader of men, establishing a culture of competitiveness, toughness, resiliency, and squeezed out every bit of fight this team could mustard. Offensive players like star receiver DeVante Parker began to show up and show out more consistently. The defensive play was far more competitive and would force turnovers on a gamely basis. The Miami Dolphins were no longer the pushover team we known them as at the beginning of the season and gave their fans something that they could truly lean on moving forward.
Miami’s 2020 off-season has been nothing short of spectacular! They went in to attack mode in addressing their defense with veteran signs of CB Byron Jones (5-year deal), LB Kyle Van Noy (4-Year deal) and DE Shaq Lawson (3-year deal). They absolute dominated the 2020 NFL draft in which selected QB of the future, Tua Tagovailoa (5th overall), a potential franchise Tackle in Austin Jackson (18th overall), and DB Noah Igbinoghene (30th overall), all of which selected with there 3 first round picks! Chan Gailey was hired out of retirement to come and be the Offensive Coordinator and Josh Boyer was promoted to be the new Defensive Coordinator.
The Outlook for the Miami Dolphins moving forward looks absolutely awesome! GM Chris Grier did an amazing job of infusing this roster with a combination of both young and veteran talent. Brian Flores looks to continue his establishment of a winning culture, similar to what we’ve been accustomed to in his old stomping grounds in New England. As long as Tua can be brought along slowly and remain injury free, an AFC East crown is surely not out of the question in the near future for this Miami Franchise.
