Michael Fitzgerald specializes in southern history, African American history, and the Civil War era including slavery, civil rights, and related topics. His most recent book is “Splendid Failure: Postwar Reconstruction in the American South.” His current project is a full-scale history of the Reconstruction era in Alabama.
