Microsoft handover your data keys to FBI

Listen Later

Microsoft’s BitLocker is a full-disk encryption security feature designed to protect Windows devices from data theft by encrypting entire storage volumes. Recent reports highlight that Microsoft provides recovery keys to law enforcement agencies, such as the FBI, when presented with valid legal orders or warrants. This practice is possible because many Windows installations, particularly those using Microsoft accounts, automatically upload recovery keys to the company’s cloud by default for user convenience. While this ensures data can be recovered if a user loses their password, it creates a centralized custody point that critics argue compromises true privacy. Technical experts suggest that users seeking higher security should use offline key storage or third-party encryption tools like VeraCrypt to maintain sole control over their data. In contrast, other tech giants often employ zero-knowledge architectures to ensure they cannot access or surrender user encryption keys to authorities.
