We've had several conversations on the podcast about harmful eating patterns and body image concerns. We've mentioned that diet mentality is akin to disordered eating, but haven't really delved into what it means to have an Eating Disorder (ED).
EDs are diagnosed by a specific set of criteria found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM 5). That's right, we often think of Eating Disorders as a physical, diet-obsessed issue. And while EDs manifest physically, they originate psychologically. This is an important distinction because it helps people understand why "just eat!" doesn't work for treatment.
Join us for this important discussion to shed some light on a topic that loves to hide in silence and shame. We cover the difference between disordered eating and actual EDs, some shocking statistics about EDs and suggestions on how you can help prevent societal ED encouragement.
If you or someone you know is suffering from disordered eating or you suspect an Eating Disorder, there is help. We have linked the National Eating Disorders website below, which is a great place to start. Also reach out to a qualified medical provider, preferably one who is versed in Eating Disorders.
