“Don’t you miss your kids?” “Who’s watching your kids while you work?”
If you’ve heard those questions, you know how fast guilt can follow, and you’ve probably noticed that nobody asks the dads.
In this episode, I talk about mom guilt in midlife. How it quietly takes our time, our energy, and eventually our sense of who we are. And how one shift, from habit-based decisions to values-based choices, helps you get your peace and your identity back.
Why do working moms feel more guilt than working dads?
Research shows full-time working moms report more guilt than full-time working dads about how work affects their kids. The guilt is strongest when a woman feels she’s falling short of an “ideal mom.” It isn’t about how much she loves her family. It’s about the expectations she’s carrying.
How does mom guilt cause women to lose their identity in midlife?
When guilt shows up, the first thing most moms cut is time for themselves. One guilty “yes” at a time, she disappears from her own life. By her 40s or 50s, she may not recognize the woman in the mirror.
What is the difference between a habit-based decision and a values-based choice?
A habit-based decision runs on autopilot, driven by fear, expectation, and “what will people think?” A values-based choice starts with a pause and one question: What matters most to me, and what is God asking of me? Knowing your values makes decisions clearer and guilt quieter.
How do you respond when someone asks, “Don’t you miss your kids?”
Answer from your values, not your guilt. You don’t owe anyone a defense. A settled answer might be: “Every day. And I want them to see a mom who uses what God gave her.”
What does the Bible say about guilt and people-pleasing?
Galatians 1:10 reminds us that we serve God, not human approval. Much of what we call mom guilt is people-pleasing dressed up as love.

You've gotten really good at "I'm fine." The smile at church. The wave in the parking lot. But what if the mask you're wearing is the very thing keeping you from being loved?
Survival Mode Breakthrough Coaching Session $47
Before we get into today's message, if you're worn out from holding it all together and you're ready to set some of it down, I'd love to sit with you. It's called the Survival Mode Breakthrough session. One hour, just you and me, for $47. No mask needed. Email me at [email protected] or call 970.279.1818.
The message
Friend, let me take you back. I was working on my master's. Kaden and Ava were small. From the outside, I probably looked like I had it all together. Mom, student, doing all the things.
Here's what it really looked like. It's midnight on a Friday. I'm writing a paper. I've got hours to go. And I am out of whipped topping for my coffee.
Small thing, right? But my neighbor drove up to our little gas station, the one that carries a little bit of everything. And then there was a knock on my back door. A can of whipped topping. I've never forgotten that knock.
My neighbor knew because I'd let them know. I didn't have the mask on. I was in community, and thank heavens I was.
In 1 Samuel 16:7, Samuel is looking over Jesse's sons. Tall. Strong. They look the part. And God says no. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.
God sees behind the mask. He always has. He knows the heart, and He stays. He does not leave us; we leave Him. You cannot be in community unless you share what's going on in your life. You cannot be in community unless you're willing to give and receive. Some of us are great at giving. Receiving the whipped topping is harder.
And you cannot be in community without saying no sometimes. If you missed last Sunday's episode on saying no, go back to episode 113.
The Mask
So let's talk about what that mask is made of, because nobody wakes up and decides to pretend. The mask gets built one belief at a time. If they really knew me, they wouldn't stay. I can't ask for help. I'm the strong one. My needs are a burden. I have to earn my place.
Those are self-limiting beliefs, and most of us picked them up so long ago, we think they're just the truth.
On Wednesday I told you about one I heard as a child. "If you can't do it right, don't do it at all." That sentence followed me for years. Maybe yours sounds different, but it does the same thing. It keeps you small, and it keeps you hidden.
2 Corinthians 10:5 tells us to take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ. So we hold that belief up to Him and ask, Lord, is this true? Is this what You say about me? And friend, it isn't. He looked at the heart and chose the shepherd boy. He's looking at yours.
What's under the mask
Here's what I see in coaching. When a woman has worn the mask a long time, she can tell you what everyone else needs. Her husband. Her kids. Her church. Her boss. Ask her what she values, and she gets quiet.
That's what the mask costs us. We've lived by everyone else's expectations so long, we've lost track of our own values.
So in our first session, we start with a list of value words. You choose ten. Then we narrow it to three. And those three become your focus for the next ninety days.
Three words. They tell you what to say yes to. They tell you what to say no to. And they tell you who you are when nobody's watching.
When you know your values, you don't need the mask. You're not performing anymore. You're living from what God put in you.
Breathe, Pray, Move
So how do we take it off? The same way we do everything around here. Breathe, Pray, Move.
Breathe: you're already known. God saw the midnight version of you before anyone else did. The tired one. The one running on coffee. He looks at the heart, and He stays. So breathe, friend. There's nobody left to impress.
Pray: ask Him what belief is holding the mask on. Usually there's a fear under it. That I'll be too much. That I'll be a burden. That they'll see I don't have it together. David prayed it this way in Psalm 139:23: "Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts." Make that your prayer this week. Then name the belief to Him plainly. One honest sentence, no polish.
Move: let one person in. Share what's really going on. Receive when somebody offers, even if it's as small as a can of whipped topping. And say no when you need to, because a yes you don't mean is just another mask.
God sees behind the mask. He knows your heart. And He's not going anywhere God provides the enough. You don't have to perform it.
If you want help finding your three words and what's under your mask, that's what the Survival Mode Breakthrough session is for. Email me at [email protected] or message 970.279.1818.

Perfectionism Is Not a Value, It's a Fear: A Growth Mindset for the Woman Tired of Starting Over
Did you grow up hearing, "If you can't do it right, don't do it at all"? I did, and it followed me for years. In this episode, we take that sentence apart and look at what a growth mindset offers the woman who keeps starting over.
How do I overcome perfectionism?
Start by seeing it for what it is. Perfectionism is not a value. It's a fear. It tells you that if you can't do something all the way right, it doesn't count. A growth mindset says you're not finished, and that's okay. You learn, you adjust, and you take the next step.
What is the difference between perfectionism and mastery?
Mastery keeps practicing and keeps getting better. Perfectionism won't let you begin until you're already there. Mastery is on the list of value words I use with coaching clients. Perfect is not.
Why do I keep quitting and starting over?
All-or-nothing thinking. You miss one day, decide you blew it, and wait for Monday. A missed day is information. It tells you something about your week, your energy, and your plan.
What does the Bible say about perfectionism?
God never asked us for perfect. "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9). And He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion (Philippians 1:6).

A growth mindset in midlife starts with three honest questions. Friend, are you tired of holding it all together?
This week my son took a good spill. He was carrying a box, stepping up into the back of a van, and his knee gave out. One ER visit later (nothing broken, thank You, Lord), this mama was on duty opening chip bags and yogurt containers. And it got me thinking. How many times do we take ten steps back because of what we are carrying?
In this Sunday Solace episode, I share that story, plus the day my son asked for a little bell to ring whenever he needed me. He had it for about one hour. Oh my stars! I made a new plan fast. But God never does that. He is available all day, every day.
The 3 questions to ask yourself this week:
In this episode:
Scripture: Matthew 11:28, Galatians 6:2, Psalm 121, Psalm 145:18

It started in a kitchen. An eighth grader ran in and said, "Mom, I know what I want to do. Will you help me?"
When the school couldn't help, Shellee Howard went back to school herself. Years later, she's a certified independent college strategist. Shellee has guided all four of her children through college with a plan, and founded CollegeReady. She also leads a nonprofit where teenagers support students in Uganda, and earn the necessary community service hours during high school for college applications.
This conversation is for the mom in the middle of the mess. Maybe your student is in middle school and you're already panicking. Maybe it's senior year and you're realizing there's no plan. Shellee brings practical wisdom, real hope, and a reminder that this has to be a village.
The one word I kept coming back to after this interview? Legacy.

Short description:
Do you feel guilty every time you say no? Struggling to tell the difference between what's actually yours to carry and what isn't? In this Sunday Solace episode, Rachael shares the therapy assignment that changed her life almost thirty years ago — and why discernment, not more willpower, is the gift that sets midlife women free to hear God's yes.
Why does saying no feel so hard, even when you know it's the right answer?
If you've ever agreed to something you didn't have capacity for just to avoid disappointing someone, you already know the exhaustion of living without discernment. It's not a character flaw. It's a skill you were never taught, and one you can absolutely learn.
In this episode, Rachael takes you back to her late 20s and the very first assignment her therapist gave her: tell three people no in one week. She unpacks why that felt nearly impossible, what it revealed about years of people-pleasing disguised as kindness, and the moment everything shifted — realizing that every "no" to what isn't yours opens a door to what God actually has for you.
You'll learn:
If you're a Christian woman in midlife who feels stretched thin by everyone else's expectations, this episode is your permission slip to grow into discernment — one small "no" at a time.

Struggling With Sudden Change? How Growth Mindset, Values, and Discernment Help You Find Your Footing in a New Season
The quick answer: When life changes unexpectedly, a growth mindset helps you ask "What is this season asking of me?" instead of "Why is this happening to me?" Your values give you a foundation to stand on. Discernment helps you decide what to keep, what to set down, and what can wait. Christ at the center holds all of it together.
We had a ninety-eight degree heat wave in the middle of fall. Nobody ordered that. And life does the same thing: a schedule shift, a new school routine, the holidays coming in fast. In this episode of Midlife Transformation, Rachael shares what to hold onto when the unexpected shows up, and why survival mode is not where God wants you to stay.
In This Episode You'll Discover:
Common Questions, Answered
What is a growth mindset?
A growth mindset is the belief that you can learn and grow through what you face. It isn't positive thinking or pretending things aren't hard. It asks, "What is my next faithful step?" You can be tired and growing at the same time.
How do I stay grounded when life changes unexpectedly?
Start with a foundation that doesn't change with the weather: Christ first, then your top three values. When something unexpected hits, check your next move against them. Then take one slow breath, ask God what is yours to do today, and take one small step.
What is the difference between discernment and making a decision?
Deciding is choosing quickly from the options in front of you. Discernment is prayerful and slower. It asks what is yours to carry in this season, what to set down, and what can wait. Not every unexpected change needs a reaction.
How do I build a new routine when a new season starts?
Choose one anchor habit that lines up with a value, such as fifteen quiet minutes before the house wakes up. Keep your baseline small, and say no to something new so you can say yes to what matters most.
What does the Bible say about seasons of change?
Scripture says God built seasons into creation and that they keep moving. He also offers hope as an anchor for the soul while we're in them.
Scripture in This Episode
Genesis 8:22 (NIV): "As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease."
Hebrews 6:19 (NIV): "We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure."
Philippians 1:9-10: Paul prays that our love would grow in knowledge and depth of insight so that we can discern what is best.
Try This Week: Breathe, Pray, Move
Breathe: take one slow breath before you respond. Pray: ask God, "Show me what's mine to do today." Move: take one small step that lines up with a value. Then write your top three values on a sticky note and put it where you'll see it in the morning.

Feeling Stuck in Growth? Why Letting Go Reveals What You Truly Value
We talk a lot about growth mindset like it's about pushing forward, doing more, trying harder. But sometimes real growth starts with the opposite — letting go long enough to get still. In this Sunday Solace episode, Rachael Arnold explores what happens when we stop gripping so tightly to what we're doing and finally ask: does this actually reflect what I say I value?
In This Episode:
Scripture: Psalm 46:10 | Isaiah 30:15

A cracked coffee mug, an unexpected trigger, and a simple exercise to shift your growth mindset — plus 3 things to try this week.
This episode teaches a growth mindset practice for when an unexpected word or memory triggers you: naming it, remembering you're not walking through it alone, and using your "value words" to turn frustration into gratitude. Rachael shares three things listeners can do this week — choose value words, pick a word for the year, and put a date on one choice.
In This Episode, You'll Learn
Frequently Asked Questions
What does "perfectly imperfect" mean? It means something can still be fully yours, still functional, still loved — crack and all. Rachael uses her cracked coffee mug as the picture: still her favorite, still in use. It's a reminder that God isn't disposing of us for being imperfect.
Why do I get triggered by a word or phrase out of nowhere? A word or phrase can unexpectedly connect to a moment from your past — recent or years old — even when you thought you were completely fine. This episode reframes that moment: you're not meant to carry it alone. It's an invitation to lean on God and community, not a sign something is wrong with you.
What are "value words" and how do I choose mine? Value words are the 2-3 words you return to every 90 days to guide your choices — Rachael's current three are family, communication, and improvement. Write them somewhere visible (she uses Post-it notes), and when you face a decision or an unexpected frustration, ask which value word it connects to.
What is a "word for the year"? It's one guiding word you come back to all year, layered on top of your 90-day value words. Rachael's word this year is abundance — and she uses it to track how God is providing across health, mindset, and faith, not just finances.
Why does putting a date on something matter for growth mindset? Without a specific date, a needed choice — a hard phone call, a habit change — quietly slides from "tomorrow" to "this weekend" to "next week" indefinitely. Attaching a real date to a value-based choice is what actually moves it from intention to action.

There's a drawer most of us have — literal or otherwise — full of things that used to fit and don't anymore. In this episode, Rachael tells the story of cleaning out a a drawer of the coffee bar full of lids that do not match all of the cups, and uses it to unpack why a growth mindset isn't about adding more. It's about being willing to let go of what's taking up space first.
