A decorated Marine veteran who survived multiple deployments to Iraq now fights for his life after being shot by an individual who should never have been on our streets. Jimmy Fries, a 44-year-old father of a five-month-old baby, was working as a security guard when he attempted to confiscate a weapon from a patron at El Patio Sports Bar in San Antonio. The confrontation ended with Fries being shot three times, including once through the neck, leaving him paralyzed and unable to speak.

The shooter, Wilmer Vladimir Ortiga Ruiz, had been arrested four times previously, repeatedly released on minimal bond amounts, and consistently failed to appear for court hearings. Each time, instead of facing deportation or serious consequences, charges were reduced and opportunities for freedom were extended.
