Coles have decided to wave the white flag on their plan to ban plastic bags, and I say - good on them. This is what you call theory vs reality.
What happened in Australia is they said we are going to get rid of the single-use plastic bags. We are going to get rid of them or you will have to bring in your own bag, or in the meantime get charged 15 cents for the replacement.
They did that over in Australia without too much fuss, but here in New Zealand, we went "Oh that's not very nice, that isn't fair, we won't remember to bring them". But over there they went 'Get stuffed, there is no way we are going to bring our own bags in and no way are we paying 15 cents'. And they owned their decision.
What I would advocate for is to stop being a bunch of compliant saps, and when somebody says something stupid which this unquestionably is, say 'I'm not going to shop with you until you change your policy.'
So they are going to be giving away plastic bags for the foreseeable future. In other words, you are never going to get your reusable bags in Australia.
