About MikeEarthship BiotectureRadically Sustainable Living
Mike is a veteran pioneer sustainable architect and builder from New Mexico. He’s famous for the design and construction of Earthships; passive solar houses. He advocates “radically sustainable living”, and slams the profession of architecture for clinging onto outdated concepts that are not sustainable. Mike uses our abundant waste products for building. Things like car tires, tin cans and glass bottles. Mike graduated as an architect in 1969, published his thesis in 1971 and built his first house from recycled cans in 1972. He has written five books on sustainable design and building.
In the Garbage Warrior documentary made about his life and work, Mike describes one of his new homes, called the Phoenix: “There’s nothing coming into this house, no power lines, no gas lines, no sewage lines coming out, no water lines coming in, no energy being used … We’re sitting on 6,000 gallons of water, growing food, sewage internalized, 70 degrees (21° C) year-round … What these kind of houses are doing is taking every aspect of your life and putting it into your own hands … A family of four could totally survive here without having to go to the store… Earthships operate off the electrical grid, requiring little or no mortgage payment and no utility bills.”
