The Talking Point

Millions spent to keep ministers lights on

Listen Later

One of the stories that dominated the weekend is that of taxpayer money spent to keep power uninterrupted for ministers and their deputies. The amount is said to be around R7-million since June 2019. This was revealed by newly appointed Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Sihle Zikalala, answering a question by DA MP Leon Schreiber. According to reports, the department spent R18.3 million on electricity alone for their homes in Cape Town and R7.4 million has for water. I guess this would not have been an issue if the country was not facing an electricity blackout. What does this say about the ethics around our leadership and politicians in general as they seem to put themselves first and the country second. What should we read into this?
