Afreen Minai, Militarism and Human Rights Program Assistant at the Friends Committee on National Legislation, talks about a recent AUMF (Authorized Use of Military Force) directed against Iran-based militias recently proposed by Texas Representative Michael McCaul. AUMFs permit military action without declaration of war, and the AUMF on Iraq and the War on Terror is still in effect — after more than 20 years. Minai says that these AUMFs need sunset dates, a specific named target, and robust reporting, and that this new AUMF could undermine progress in Middle East relations.
