Episode 19 – Mindfulness Through Visualization – a new feature with Jen Newman [Mindfulness Podcast]

David introduces what he’s calling an “additional series” in this episode – Amplified Mindfulness – featuring his fiance, Jen Newman. This will be a monthly feature, one born out of Jen’s own experience as a gymnast and the things she’s learned about it since then.

Jen says that the nature of our experience is the mind itself, and one of the most powerful ways for anyone to begin the practice of mindfulness (being aware of what’s going on in your own mind) is through the practice of visualization. Visualization is nothing more than picturing an outcome and the process of getting to it. It’s thinking of the way you desire a situation or task to turn out. This enables you to sort of “work through” a process before you actually get to it, even multiple times. It will help you think positively and powerfully toward a solution instead of focusing on barriers or obstacles to the solution.

The practice of visualization also helps you set goals and work toward them. Jen tells a great story about what Jim Carrey did to set a financial goal for himself when he first started his career. It’s a wonderful example of what visualization is about and how the consistent practice of it can propel you toward the accomplishment of your goals, no matter how lofty they may be. You’ll want to listen to this episode just to hear that great story!

Jen’s also going to touch on the research that is showing that a regular practice of mindfulness can benefit the average person in many, many ways. The data really is amazing! Neural connections are built, which means the brain is being rewired to actually THINK in new ways. Health concerns can be addressed through the practice of mindfulness. Even success can be increased through this discipline.

You really should listen to this episode. Jen ends it with a short example of the kind of mindfulness practices that will be contained in these monthly episodes, leading you how to think, how to focus, and how to clear your mind of the noise so that you can better concentrate on the things in life that really matter.
