This episode explores procrastination not as laziness or poor discipline, but as a form of psychological protection.
Many of us assume that procrastination means we lack motivation. In reality, avoidance often arises when the subconscious mind associates a task with threat — failure, judgement, loss, or imagined catastrophe. When that happens, delaying action becomes a way of staying safe.
I explore two common drivers behind procrastination: the pull of comfort and familiarity, and the much stronger force of imagined negative outcomes. Our imagination, especially when fuelled by past experiences, often overrides willpower entirely.
We look at how avoidance behaviours form through pattern-matching — how the mind learns to associate certain actions with danger — and why simply “trying harder” rarely works. When fear is the driver, pressure usually increases resistance.
Rather than offering productivity hacks, this episode focuses on understanding the story behind the avoidance. By tracing fears back to their origins and questioning whether they still apply, it becomes possible to loosen their grip and respond differently.
The episode also explores practical ways of shifting out of avoidance by working with leverage, values, bodily sensation, and physiology — not to force productivity, but to create conditions where action feels safer and more available.
This is a reflective episode for anyone who feels stuck, frustrated with themselves, or caught in cycles of avoidance despite genuinely wanting to move forward.
