Even before humans developed metal tools, stonework, jewelry and mineral wealth have been an integral part in human society. With the advent of the industrial revolution, with coal being exploited as a primary energy source for heating and locomotion, even more minerals ranging from copper to iron to aluminum became accessible on a scale never before seen. Now, with fossil fuels such as coal and oil becoming more difficult to source and pressure from environmental concerns causing a search for greener energy, a new frontier in mining for the green economy, ranging from lithium to cobalt, has opened, raising new challenges and opportunities in the never ending search for wealth from beneath.
