In the midst of the Cold War, the Soviet Union, a powerhouse in the world of hockey and gold medalists in 5 of the last 6 Winter Olympics, faced off against a young and scrappy surprise team, the United States of America in the medal round. In an exhibition matchup three weeks earlier, the USSR defeated the U.S. 10-3 at Madison Square Garden.
Herb Brooks and Team USA had stunned the world so far with their performance in the winter games and now they had the chance to complete the biggest upset in sports history by taking down the Soviet Union. If they played this game ten times, the U.S. might have lost nine... but not in this game.
