Episode 7: Arianna interviews Erika Snyder, a native Angeleno from the San Fernando Valley, who is pursuing her PhD degree at UCSB. Erika talks about her childhood fascination with all things science, coping with grief at a young age, and her resilient and tenacious nature lead her to where she is today.
Erika Snyder is a 23-year-old PhD student entering the second year of my PhD in Biomolecular Science and Engineering at UC Santa Barbara. Her childhood consisted of running around in the hills, collecting specimens (bugs, plants), and caring for injured wildlife. She was part of the Southwestern Herpetology Society for many years.
While the loss of her father at age 17 marked her life and her family's life, it instilled a deep grittiness and tenacity to overcome. Today, she works in an immunology lab that studies how immune cells respond to signals in cancer cells. One of her goals is to mentor undergraduate students interested in research, particularly women from underrepresented backgrounds.Outside of work, she collects vinyl records, reads, and cares for her plant collection.
