Publisher's Summary:
When Jonny went missing everything changed. His mother's heart is full of terror and sadness instead of joy. His father's study overflows with newspaper cuttings and profiles on missing people instead of the academic texts that were there before. His sister, once carefree, now carries the weight of the world on her shoulders. His bedroom at home remains untouched and ready for his return. A place is set for him at the table on Christmas day each year. His birthday is always celebrated; his unopened gifts gather dust.
The hands on the clock continue to turn and yet Jonny hasn't returned. Where is he?

A good read. It's okay.
First of Nicci's Gerrard's books I've read. I enjoyed it but missed the usual Nicci French suspense. Good read though.
Missing Persons
Very well written. Once again I felt I knew the people in the book. I was so pleased that it ended well.
Not for everybody...
I wasn't bowled over by the last Nicci French book I read, and figured that trying the `wife' half of Nicci French (aka Nicci Gerrard) might do the trick. This book is the story of a family and their despair when the eldest son Johnny literally vanishes. Isabel and Felix are parents to Johnny, Tamsin and Mia. Johnny leaves home to go to University and things at first appear normal. However, when Johnny fails to contact his parents they get in touch with the University to be told that Johnny no longer attends. He has literally vanished into thin air. From that point on their family is not the same.
The opening few chapters certainly kept me interested as we see Johnny set off for University and the progression of the parents worry as they cannot contact him. However, after a period of time has passed we see the family at their lowest as they try to cope with the grief of losing Johnny. The uncertainty of whether he is alive and well, or missing and possibly dead. As the book stretched on I realised that this book wasn't so much the story of Johnny going missing and the attempts to find him and work out what really happened. If anything it's an in-depth look at how people cope in the darkest times.
The book starts off with an introduction section and then is split by family member. We first follow Isabel as she copes by still buying him presents and the more time that passes the more her relationship with her children and husband suffer. This is followed by sections from the perspective of both Felix, Johnny's father and Mia, his youngest sister. The book is certainly written with feeling and it almost has an intrusive feel to it as each person's feelings are revealed. The writing and talent are there in spades, I just felt that this was too far down the road in terms of delving into each person's emotions.
This isn't the classic type of crime book, more of a sad mystery tale where the people left behind have to try to fit the pieces of the puzzle together. This book is certainly different but not my sort of thing. It won't suit everybody but I would imagine will be a favourite amongst her fans.
A Sad But Hopeful Story
This is a.very sad and poignant novel which works on a number of levels. The basic story is about a teenager who goes missing - from his university - where he chose to go only a few months before. There is no indication he has been abducted, lured away or done away with.
