Currently, 2 billion people worldwide live without access to water or do not have access that meets basic hygiene standards. We are facing a global water crisis, which is a direct consequence of the climate crisis and, in turn, has been recognized as "the most severe threat multiplier to global security," as stated by UNEP, the United Nations agency dedicated to environmental issues. While many parts of the world are grappling with health emergencies, social tensions, and even outright wars linked to water supply difficulties, in wealthier and more developed countries, we still need to debunk the myth that water is a free resource.

The issue of land and soil quality rarely takes center stage when discussing ecological transition. Yet, in the European Union alone, urbanization, desertification, erosion, and soil sealing lead to the loss of tens of thousands of square kilometers of productive land each year.
