There is a big difference between vision and mission. Both are important, but Jesus gave us a MISSION, not a vision. The Holy Spirit may put vision in our hearts, and that matters, but every Christian who ever lived has been given the same mission: to make disciples of all men… to reconcile people back into the loving arms of their creator. This message will not tell you where we are going, but it will show you how we will get there.
Reconciliation is the ministry that the church has been given. We exist to do that. And it is fascinating when you study the Bible, especially the words and stories of Jesus, how obvious it is that Jesus wants us to see how pointless our religion, our rituals, our sacraments, even our praise and our offerings and our sacrifices are, if we are not doing the job of reconciling with people.
NOTE: in this sermon, I referred to “the meal covenant” and I mis-spoke saying that “the Bible calls it a meal covenant” - when in fact, it is what is “known as a meal covenant” but the Bible does not specifically refer to it using that term.
