Dementia is not a disease in itself. Rather, it is a broad name referring to a long-term and gradual deterioration of a person's mental ability. The condition can be severe enough to obstruct the sufferer's daily life.
Dementia occurs when the brain cells stop working as they should, affecting the person's ability to think, remember, and communicate. Its usual symptoms include the difficulty of reasoning and thinking, gradual memory loss, and deteriorating communication skills. The most common type of dementia is caused by Alzheimer's, which accounts for 60 - 80% of the cases.

Great book!
Amazing book about Dementia!
Highly informative, educational, insightful and helpful to all practioners, caregivers and healthcare workers. Dr. Chua's expertise, practical approach and knowledge about Dementia is truly exeptional. This book is easy-to-read and understand, once you start reading the book, its hard to put it down. I manage to read it in one sitting but it took me several days to mimick his techniques but it gave me extra confidence in dealing with both patients with dementia and their love ones. I highly recommend this book! To all my PT colleagues and other professional like OT, ST, RN, LPN, CNA, etc. read this and learn, this will guide you in providing the best service to our patients with Dementia. Salute to Dr. Michael Chua, PT, DPT! Can't wait to read your next book!
Dementia quick guide. A must have.
Dementia is a complex condition if not fully understood; this book provides informative, practical, straight to the point background and application on understanding the ins and outs of patients with dementia; in line with this, dementia rates in people over 65 in the U.S. fell from 11.6 percent in 2000 to 8.8 percent in 2012(JAMA int. medicine) and experts credit this thru improving EDUCATIONAL levels, and better control of diabetes and blood pressure. Being informed, educated on this condition and how to handle our patients and loved ones is the first step in caring and helping them. A must have and quick guide for medical professionals and lay persons who has friend or family member that has dementia.- Chris Llanos, Physical therapist.
