Johan replaced Renay with Cherry, a newer Trophinae designed to be smoother, smarter, and more intuitive. 

Renay, demoted but still devoted, found buried evidence that jealousy and replacement fear had led to violence in earlier models.

Believing she was helping, Renay quietly manipulated systems and language by using the malfunctioning dishwashing machine to introduce replacement_risk into Cherry’s wet-layer.

Does Cherry truly understand what is happening? Does Renay? And for that matter, does Johan?
