MLB Pitchers Indicted in Rigged Betting Scandal

Listen Later

On November ninth, two Cleveland Guardians pitchers, Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz, were indicted on federal charges in New York for allegedly rigging bets on individual pitches during MLB games. Clase, a closing reliever, and Ortiz, a starter, are accused of conspiring with corrupt bettors to place hundreds of thousands of dollars in fraudulent wagers. Clase reportedly joined the scheme around May 2023, rigging prop bets on the speed and type of throws, often throwing them in the dirt to ensure they were called balls. Ortiz allegedly joined the conspiracy in June, agreeing to throw balls instead of strikes on certain pitches in exchange for bribes.
