At 16 Danielle Pardoe lost her father unexpectedly. Then one night while out socialising, she signed up to the military as part of a drunken bet and was accepted. At 24, 1 year into her military career, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Very soon after radiation therapy, she survived a near fatal car crash.
