A check valve is required within 25 feet of the fire department connection (FDC) inlet. This is to prevent long sections of "dry" pipe that would discharge air instead of water when pumped into by the fire department. Additionally, a visible and audible flow alarm is required above the FDC, visible from the street or an approved location, to assist firefighters in locating the FDC during an activation.
