It’s that time of year.
No not Christmas. Southern Conference season is just around the corner for the Mocs men’s and women’s basketball teams.
On this episode of Mocs on the Mic presented by SmartBank, host Chris Goforth talks with head coaches Shawn Poppie and Dan Earl recapping the season thus far and what the SoCon play looks like.
The women head into the holiday break with an 8-6 record and return home for the first time in a month to close out non-conference play on December 29 against Jacksonville State. Southern Conference play opens on the road for the women at ETSU on January 5. The next weekend the Mocs will host Samford and Mercer.
First-year head coach Shawn Poppie highlights the newcomers and their impact on the team including Yazz Wazeerud-Din, Raven Thompson and Brooklyn Crouch. He also talks about graduate Abbey Cornelius and her journey to 1,000 points. He also looks ahead to league play and who is the favorite and where his team needs to improve to return to the top of the SoCon.
The Chattanooga men hit Southern Conference play in the week before the new year with both games on the road. The Mocs open up on December 29 at The Citadel then head to Mercer for a New Year’s Eve matchup.
Coach Earl sees a competitive conference season and feels that a strong non-conference season where UTC went 8-5, will work to his team’s advantage. It’s four games into the season before Earl and the Mocs will take on his former team VMI in Chattanooga on January 7.
Jake Stephens is a proven leader who has garnered all but one Player of the Week nod from the league and was named USBWA Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week. However, Coach Earl looks to the rest of the squad and feels a great amount of depth, unselfish, coachable and high character players on his squad. AJ Caldwell got the mask off and the shots have started falling.
