Modern Day Griots: Celebrating National Poetry Month

This is a spoken word poetry showcase, to celebrate national poetry month, which is April, with a modern day twist.

What is a Griot?

Griot - An African tribal storyteller and musician is called a griot. The griot's role was to preserve the genealogies and oral traditions of the tribe. They were usually among the oldest men in a tribe.

This event will feature 6 powerful poets, sharing their storytelling through the art of poetry.


This event has been organized by Shakkoi, also known as, "Need Some Koi", has been writing poetry for over 10 years. In 2018 she self-published a poetry book titled, The Poetic Transitions from a Hothead to a Conscious Queen.
