In 1992, President George HW Bush was denied a second term as president. It was mostly blamed on a charismatic billionaire that called himself a ‘maverick”. That billionaire was Ross Perot. Many rank and file Republicans turned on Bush due to his failure to keep his one campaign promise: “no new taxes.”

This drove voter turnout against the incumbent and elected a southern Democrat, former Arkansas governor, Bill Clinton. Due to their own propensity for fucking up, this gave the Republican controlled House and Senate enough information to exact revenge.

While it may have cost Clinton a lot of problems, it turned out badly for the Republicans in the end.
