Obviously, in times of extreme leadership, dictatorship etc it is important to have a free and independent media calling it like it is..HOWEVER in the times of executive branch-media beef who suffers. Nate will argue that the American people suffer. According to a recent poll Americans trust the media less than the President!

Lastly, it is importantly to know WHO owns media outlets. Insidious messages can be promoted over "non-biased" news outlets. As humans we are prone to priming and subliminal messaging.
