My guest today is Joe Beribak. He’s a multi-hyphenate in every sense of the word—a percussionist, a conductor, a prize-winning composer, and a dedicated educator. But his path to the podium is anything but standard. We’re talking about a man who spent nearly two years in the silence of a Benedictine monastery, singing Gregorian chant, before returning to the ‘hustle’ of the modern freelance world. Joe is a recent joiner of the Chicago Federation of Musicians, but he’s also a bridge-builder. Between his late-in-life autism diagnosis and his pursuit of what he calls "Expert Noticing," Joe sees the "invisible world" of sound in a way that’s frankly on a whole different plane of the Spider-Verse. Whether he’s finding music in the sounds of a kitchen or mapping out digital "patch" charts that look like a vintage Moog synth, he is the definition of the modern, neurodivergent artist.
Ladies and Gentlemen, this is Joe Beribak…
