In this episode, I introduce you to Janice Talas-Denny.

Janice is a proud member of the Hopi tribe. She was raised on the Hopi reservation where she learned her traditional and cultural responsibilities. Understanding and speaking the Hopi language fluently has allowed Janice to have a deeper connection with her culture not only when she is participating in traditional ceremonies but in her daily life.

As the Tribal Veteran Support Coordinator at Televeda, Janice brings over 25 years of experience in clinical patient care, healthcare administration, and the behavioral health space. From her tenure at the Prescott VA to her work with Native and Indigenous communities at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center and the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community, she has cultivated deep expertise in connecting Indigenous veterans and their families to vital healthcare and community resources.

Holding a Master’s degree in Healthcare Management, a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration, and a Peer & Recovery Support Specialist Certificate, Janice is dedicated to continuous learning and plays a pivotal role in leading, building, managing, advocating for, and expanding relationships with Indigenous communities across Arizona and surrounding states.

He also serves on the governing board of United Family Advocates and the executive committee of the Coalition to End Hidden Foster Care, two national bi-partisan policy efforts to keep families together.

Michael earned his B.A. at Virginia Commonwealth University and his M. Div. from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, both with honors. He is father to five children, whom he and his wife homeschool.

In this episode, I introduce you to Deborah Grassman.

Deborah is the author of three books: Peace at Last, The Hero Within, and Soul Injury, a contributing author for four textbooks, and has 25 published articles. There are four documentary films and a TED talk that feature her work.

However, none of these achievements have taught her as much as the 10,000 dying veterans she took care of as a VA hospice Nurse Practitioner for 30 years: “If anyone wants to learn how to achieve inner peace, ask a veteran who has successfully struggled to find it for the rest of their lives after they returned from war.”

The lessons she learned culminated into a concept known as “Soul Injury,” a wound that separates a person from their own sense of self. Deborah now provides presentations and workshops that can help anyone recover their loss of self-worth by healing the relationship that they have with themselves.

When Carlotta was 14, she remembers becoming enthralled with a booklet on preparing taxes.

She decided then that she wanted to work for the IRS, so at 14 years old, she began studying tax law with the dream of working for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Shortly after attaining her dream of working for the IRS, Carlotta realized that the IRS isn’t actually in place to help small businesses like she’d thought and it felt like she was working for the wrong side. As an auditor, she saw tons of tax returns with sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars of missed deductions that were detrimental for the client. In this episode, I introduce you to Dr. Susan DeLaney

Dr DeLaney graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a registered nurse and practiced for 8 years in various clinical settings. She then completed the four-year, full-time residential post-graduate naturopathic medical program at National College of Natural Medicine in Portland Oregon, one of the eight accredited schools of Naturopathic Medicine in North America as well as an international residency with a Homeopathic physician in India, where, like in many parts of Europe including England, Germany and France, homeopathy is an accepted medical system.

Returning to her native North Carolina, Dr. DeLaney set up medical practice in Carrboro where she has been treating patients since 1987. Dr. DeLaney uses centuries-old natural, non-toxic therapies and modalities informed by the most current advances and research in the study of health and human systems.

In 2014 she began her studies with Dr. Wiliam Walsh and has continued to use his treatment protocols for anxiety, depression, ADD, OCD and other mental health issues. She uses the Walsh protocols along with homeopathy, nutrition, herbal therapies, to assist and support the body’s own innate healing systems.

In this episode, I introduce you to Alison Perry Sower (pronounced "so-er")

Alison is a Licensed Professional Counselor, military family member, and founder of the nonprofit Central Oregon Veterans Ranch. Alison began working with veterans in 2005, two years after her brother deployed for the invasion of Iraq as an Apache helicopter pilot. She served as a trauma therapist for six years in the Department of Veterans Affairs in both urban and rural settings.

In 2012 she left the VA to pursue her vision of a more holistic approach to healing veterans. Central Oregon Veterans Ranch, "a working ranch that restores purpose and spirit to veterans of all ages and eras", was established in 2014. Alison is the co-producer of the award-winning film Cover Me: The Path to Purpose, a 2022 documentary featuring the work of Central Oregon Veterans Ranch.

Alison currently works as a trauma informed nonprofit coach and consultant, presenter and educator, and is writing a professional memoir about her journey.

The need for family-centered healing approaches is critical since untreated PTSD in female veterans can increase the risk of anxiety disorders in their children by five times. Importantly, 92% of women in nature-based therapy programs achieve stable housing with their children after one year, a stark contrast to the 47% success rate of those receiving traditional interventions.

RS "Ruffshot" June grew up in Philadelphia, PA—about as far from cattle country as you can get. He often jokes that he "has no business being in the cattle industry," having never seen a cow up close until later in life. But Texas Slim, founder of The Beef Initiative, saw things differently. Beneath June’s work was something deeper. He lost his mother in his early 20s—after years of watching her struggle under the weight of a broken food system and a fraying community. That loss became his fuel.
