I am currently a pessimistic gloomy ray of sunshine or lack of sunshine. Today our entire family went to Target. Partly to run some errands and partly to get me out of the house and out of my mood. Target always makes my day brighter, except for today. We went to get Christmas wrapping paper and I hated all of it. Hated might be too nice of a word. I despised it all. It made me want to cancel Christmas. I took myself too seriously. Find out how I am going to embrace my mood by lightening the emotion by focusing on finding the humor in my current attitude. Oh, and I decided not to cancel Christmas after all.

Being a mom is hard. Bring a little calm to the chaos and take a moment to fill up your own cup. It doesn't take long. Make a coffee, put the kids down for a nap, and tune in. Most importantly -- take a moment for yourself. Join Sarah every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for your daily encouragement.
Apparently, I have a lot of friends, according to my daughter. There are 19 of them and they are all in the First Grade. In a moment when I was feeling down and pessimistic, she wanted me to know I was not alone. How often do we, as moms, feel all alone? Being a mom is hard. It takes time and patience and sometimes we lose ourselves in the day-to-day, we get lost and wonder if we even have friends anymore. So now, more than ever is the time to reach out to each other. We need to take a moment to remind the moms around us that they aren’t alone. I may have 19 friends in the first grade, but I also have countless friends who, just like me, are in the middle of motherhood. I plan on finding a few moments to text them and let them know I am thinking about them. Join me and do the same. It takes a tribe to raise children, reach out to your tribe and remind them they don’t have to do this all alone.

If you ever visit my house for any length of time, you are likely to hear my daughter say “you are getting my goat.” While that phrase can often mean to irritate or upset someone, in our house we use it to describe someone teasing you. The joke has always been that my husband has a goat farm, that’s how many goats he gets. In fact, my husband has so many goats, my daughter announced the other day that she no longer has goats. If she doesn’t have goats, then he can’t get her goat. She now has unicorns and her dad can’t have them. Can she really just change the game like that? Can she make her goats into unicorns? What if we approached our own problems like that? What if we refused to play the game others forced us to play? What if we took the goats others gave us and turned them into unicorns?

Today and tomorrow mark the celebration of Dia de Muertos and All Soul’s Day. After losing our mothers in 2019, we knew our children needed to feel the legacy of their grandmothers. Legacy is a funny term. It can be used to describe the property or money left in a will or someone who chooses to attend the same college as their parents. But it also is used to describe the mark a person left on this world. It captures the accomplishments that added richness to their own lives or those around them. It is a way to capture the story of a life and describe what is otherwise, sometimes indescribable. Over the next few days, I will be spending time reflecting on the legacy my mother and mother-in-law left. I will be sharing that with my children so they will always have a piece of their grandmothers’ hearts. But come November 3rd, I plan on focusing back on the legacy I am building, the here and now.

I am on fall break this week, but I am pulling some early gems from season 1 for you. I hope you find them encouraging! This episode was originally published on February 24. My son is no longer 9 months old and now he is running around and chowing down on goldfish. He is clearly living his best life!
My house has been a buzz of excitement. My son did something incredible! We call him Mr. Smiley because he never stops smiling. There is so much we can learn from our kids. Join me today as I share what I learned recently from my son.

During season 1 I lamented that my laundry was out of control. Well, I’d like to report, that it's better and finally under control. But the purpose of this podcast isn’t to present a picture-perfect life. The purpose is to show you behind the curtain, to be honest about my struggles, and together we can find peace within the chaos. So I have to confess, the laundry pile is still out of control and it may be worse. But I think I've found a way to be at peace with the chaos for now.

What is it with kids and their shoes? It takes my daughter way too long to pick out a pair of shoes and put them on. And why are all the shoes missing? We had a shoe-pocalypse today and it resulted in us running out of time for breakfast. Join me as I try to make sense of my daughter's shoe obsession and what went wrong.

My one-year-old son is gaslighting me. He said mommy once and then he never said it to me ever again. I’ve been told that he says it when I am not around. But, every time I try to get him to say "Mommy", you know what he says, “Daddy.” Clear as day -- daddy. A common occurrence in our house is me saying come on say mommy. Only to get back a daddy. It made me think. How often do we not share our appreciation for someone? How often do we express our love and appreciation for someone to others, but not to that person? Why do we do that?

We all try to do it all. To have it all. But the truth is, we are only one person and sometimes we just need a break. Eight years ago on Facebook, I wrote, "Sometimes I just want to tell the world I am only one person. I can't do everything. Or sometimes I just need to sleep. Maybe it is just me." I wrote that before I had kids. And now I feel it more than ever. We all need support and help from time to time. And asking for that help or taking a time out isn't selfish, it's actually you being a fantastic mother.

There is a woman who I hope to meet one day. She is a mother like me. I take comfort in knowing she, like me, is raising young children. She is my son or daughter's future, mother-in-law. I think about her often. I wonder if she is are tired like me and if Starbucks lifts her day. I hope she likes coffee. I don’t expect her to be my best friend. But I want her to know I am already preparing room in my heart for her child. I am ready to love them as if they were my own.
