Introduction
Today, Jesus invites us to a deeper kind of generosity one that goes beyond self-interest or social exchange.
The Gospel challenges our motives in doing good: Do we act out of love for God, or because we expect something in return?
Saint Martin de Porres, whose optional memorial we celebrate, lived this Gospel fully: he served the poor and the sick selflessly, seeing in each person the face of Christ.
Main Point:
“True generosity is giving without expecting anything in return.” (cf. Luke 14:13–14)
Reflection
Jesus tells his listeners not to invite only their friends or rich neighbours, but “the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind.”
He is not only speaking about hosting meals He is teaching us about the spirit of Christian charity.
True discipleship means imitating God’s own generosity, who gives rain and sunlight to all, good and bad alike.
When we give without calculating, we reflect the very heart of God.
Think of Saint Martin de Porres in Lima, Peru: born of mixed race, often despised, yet he shared food and care with beggars, slaves, and animals. His love was not selective; it was universal.
Concrete Example
You may not have much money to give, but you can share your time, attention, or forgiveness.
Visiting a sick neighbour, offering a smile to someone ignored, or supporting a classmate who struggles these are small ways to live this Gospel today.
Way Forward
Each day, ask: “Whom am I helping without expecting anything in return?”
Practice hidden acts of charity the ones only God sees.
That’s where divine reward is found.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, Teach me to love as You love freely, generously, and without counting the cost. May I find joy in serving those who cannot repay me, and see Your face in every poor and forgotten person. Amen.
