49ers 41, Lions 33 – 49ers build 28-point lead, hold on for 41-33 win over Lions
Dre Greenlaw returned an interception for a touchdown to help the San Francisco 49ers score 17 points over two-plus minutes late in the first half and they held on for a 41-33 win over the Detroit Lions. San Francisco led 38-10 early in the fourth quarter and allowed Detroit to score 23 points in three-plus minutes to pull within eight points. The Lions turned over the ball on downs at the San Francisco 24 with 12 seconds left after getting another chance when Deebo Samuel fumbled.
Seahawks 28, Colts 16 – Seahawks pressure has Wentz, Colts scrambling for solutions
Carson Wentz's debut in Indianapolis started well. Eventually, things wilted under the pressure. Wentz turned in solid numbers in a season-opening 28-16 loss to Seattle but was sacked three times, harassed many more times and couldn't finish promising drives. He was 25 of 38 with 251 yards, two TD’s and no interceptions. But the Colts still lost their 8th straight season opener.
Rams 34, Bears 14 – Stafford leads LA Rams past Bears 34-14 in dynamic debut
Matthew Stafford passed for 321 yards and three touchdowns in a dynamic debut for the Los Angeles Rams. The veteran quarterback led LA past Andy Dalton and the Chicago Bears for a 34-14 victory Sunday night. Stafford found Van Jefferson for a 67-yard touchdown on his second pass for the Rams. Stafford hit a wide-open Cooper Kupp for a 56-yard TD to open the third quarter, and he found Robert Woods for a clinching score with 3:17 to play. Dalton passed for 206 yards in his Bears debut, while rookie quarterback Justin Fields rushed for a 3-yard score while getting a handful of snaps in his NFL debut.

NFL – Dan Campbell not taking moral victories from Lions defeat
Dan Campbell wasn’t thinking about moral victories. Yes, his Detroit Lions nearly pulled off an improbable comeback by scoring 16 points in the final two minutes and moving the ball back into San Francisco territory before falling short in a 41-33 loss. Campbell was focused on the first 58 minutes of his debut as Lions coach. Detroit trailed 31-10 at halftime and by as many as 28 in the second half.
NFL – Tailgating, face-painted fans back in force at NFL stadiums
Tailgating, face-painted fans returned in full force at stadiums around the country as the NFL opened its doors to capacity for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic. Some wore masks, some didn’t. Some are vaccinated, some aren’t. Restrictions varied in different cities with the Seattle Seahawks, Las Vegas Raiders and New Orleans Saints the only teams requiring fans to provide proof of vaccination to enter. The defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers welcomed 65,566 fans Thursday night to kick off the season and 15 teams were set to host more than one million fans in Week 1. Fans are back as COVID-19 surges because of the delta variant.
