This #MondaysWithMelba, the #WomensHistoryMonth series continues with Cortes Maria Lewis James! She’s a longtime advocate for women in our community - especially those who have been impacted by the criminal justice system. She’ll be discussing one of the FEW good bills in Florida this legislative session - Ava’s Law, which would protect pregnant women who are in jail - allowing them to give birth out of custody. The law is named after baby Ava who died after her mom gave birth to her in Alachua County Jail and her pleas for help were ignored by the guards/staff.
