Mark Matzke from Ohio joins Thomas and Julie to share his experiences with the rest of the team from Small Town Monsters!  He explains how this all started with a chance encounter with Seth Breedlove at the Ohio Bigfoot Conference in 2014.  He has been on quite the journey since, traveling to California, Fouke, Arkansas and beyond, crossing off events from his bucket list as he goes, many times with his son.  We reminiscence the projects that started it all to current events and what is next with Mark and the STM crew!

Small Town Monsters began as an independent film series focusing on small town folklore across America.  The first film “Minerva Monster” was released in Spring of 2015. On this episode of  “On the Shoulders of Giants- Talking Old Timers with Thomas Steenburg”, Thomas and Julie sit down with Dustin Severs to talk about his new book “The Abominable Snowman of California: Giant Footprints, Wooden Stompers, and the Making of an American Legend”.  The book tells the story of some of the more colorful and sometimes hilarious characters, such as Dahinden, Green, Titmus, Krantz, Byrne and Bindernagel, considered to be the “original bigfoot hunters” and the legacy they left behind.  Tune in to find out more about how it all began, who the key players were and what secrets are disclosed in his book!

Dustin moved to Oregon from the Midwest in spring of 2016. He met the Bluff Creek Project guys and has been working with them ever since. He began writing the book in the fall of 2017 and self-published in the fall of 2023. He is currently working on a follow-up book, which focuses on the Patterson-Gimlin Film., which to this day is still the source of much debate.  He hopes to release that book in the fall of 2024.

Book author Dustin Severs sits down with OTSG!

"On the Shoulders of Giants- Talking Old Timers with Thomas Steenburg" welcomes podcast host and researcher Nikki Colon from west Texas. Nikki is the host of the podcast show "Sasquatch Secrets", founded in 2021. On her show she and her guests discuss Bigfoot hoaxers, liars and the insanity that can encompass the Bigfoot research arena.  She has been involved in the Bigfoot community since 2013.  She has always had a fascination with cryptids,  especially Sasquatch.  She grew up camping and having a love for the outdoors at a young age.  In 2023 she attended the Mount St. Helen’s Sasquatch Shindig in Washington State. It was a joint alliance Bigfoot Adventure between the U.S. and Canada.  Our very own Thomas Steenburg also attended and the two became fast friends.  She’s lived abroad in South Korea and has traveled to China and Thailand.  Nikki also devotes time in the field hoping to find evidence of the creature we call Sasquatch.

How did he become interested in the topic anyways? They also discuss the DNA project that Darby is undertaking and how to submit your own sample for analysis!

A first-generation college graduate now on faculty at North Carolina State University, Darby Orcutt never stopped being curious about the world.  A librarian, instructor, and researcher, his expertise at the intersection of science and culture is both intellectual and applied, as he teaches and writes about science and society while also building collaborative scientific teams to tackle complex problems and fostering conversation between researchers and the broader public.  Darby is known for his work at the intersection of Science and the Strange.  He is currently undertaking a Bigfoot DNA analysis project, asking for investigators to send him samples of anything they believe could hold potential DNA.

He continues to contribute with his research, striving to uncover the truth behind this enduring mystery through his dedication and experience.
