Sinjajevina Movement Protects Biodiversity. The host for this show is Joshua Cooper. The guests are Milan Sekulović, Petar Glomazic and Persida Jovanovic.
European herders and farmers brave brutal conditions to honor a sacred mountain and defend it from military exercises threatening biodiversity. Montenegro community activists demand protection and a halt to military exercises on Sinjajevina, the most important Community Conserved Area in the entire nation. For centuries, the people protect and care for the grasslands as one would protect the life of one’s own family. UNESCO Biosphere status recognizes the unique biodiversity, calling for conservation. Sinjajevina serves as the largest mountain grassland in the Balkans and the second in all of Europe. Each highland pastoral settlement, known as a katun, continuously makes and re-makes its own governance decisions about their commonly held lands in Sinjajevina through local assemblies. The katun determine access to pasture and govern their use. So far the frontline resistance mobilized national and global moral pressure to defend the mountain from military use.
