Today, the City of Philadelphia unveils a new public monument. Octavius V. Catto, a 19th-century civil rights activist who successfully integrated the streetcars and public transportation in the city, will be the first African-American to have public statue. In this hour, Marty talks with DAN BIDDLE and MURRAY DUBIN, former Philadelphia Inquirer reporters and authors of Tasting Freedom: Octavius Catto and the Battle for Equality in Civil War America about Catto’s life. Then, PAUL FARBER, artistic director of Monument Lab and Managing Director of the Penn Program in the Environmental Humanities, talks about who gets a monument, the process it takes to put up a monument and how the city memorializes leaders.
