<p>ST Gill was the son of a Baptist minister, but he had little sympathy for institutionalised religion. In this watercolour of an outdoor prayer meeting at Forest Creek (Chewton), the preacher’s task appears increasingly hopeless as the diggers drift off into their own private concerns. This painting was published in The Victorian Gold Fields during 1852–3, the fabulous album commissioned by the trustees of the Melbourne Public Library, as the State Library Victoria was formerly known.</p>
