What happens when life gives you unimaginable hardship… and you choose to turn it into purpose?
In this powerful episode of The More Than Your Age Podcast, host Erica Pasvar sits down with Hyun Kim, whose life journey spans immigration, grief, resilience, and starting a mission-driven organization at age 65.
Hyun moved to the United States from South Korea in 1976 with no clear plan for her future. She worked factory jobs, learned English as a second language, and navigated life in a new country while dealing with deep loneliness and family struggles.
But the greatest challenge of her life came when her son was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy as a baby. For years, Hyun devoted her life to caring for him through hospital stays, therapies, and daily challenges.
After her son passed away at 28 years old, Hyun faced the unimaginable loss no parent wants to experience.
Instead of giving up, she chose to turn her grief into something meaningful.
At 65 years old, Hyun founded an agency that helps families — especially immigrant parents with children who have developmental disabilities — understand the support systems available to them and receive the care they need.
Her story is one of courage, perseverance, faith, and discovering purpose even after deep tragedy.
If you've ever felt blocked by your circumstances, your age, or your past — this conversation will remind you that it’s never too late to create something meaningful.
