It’s Wednesday here on Morning Kickaround and it’s a great day to celebrate the U.S. Open Cup.

Major League Soccer announced it will return to sending all its American based teams to the country's oldest soccer competition next year when their calendar switches to align with most of Europe. MLS squads would enter the competition in July with the Final taking place in December. What led MLS to reverse course and return to the Open Cup and will it bring some a much needed boost to the competition? What’s going to happen with the USL’s participation?

In other news, Jacksonville Armada’s resurrection attempt is hitting some snags. Their stadium deal isn’t quite materializing as they would like, which is leading to a potential suspension of operations. Robert and Jason read the ownership statement and break it down in terms of the soccer landscape in north Florida and how it relates to the two professional clubs the city already has.

Also, amateur side Dothan United is creating some headlines with their attempts to turn professional. Instead of asking for some rich person to fund their promotion, they are looking to the masses in a crowdsourcing format to raise funds.

We are going to begin on the pitch this week with a look at Nashville SC and their pursuit of the MLS points record. Nashville is only the latest in a growing line of clubs aiming of historical regular season supremacy. Inter Miami just set the record two years ago and it wasn’t long ago the Los Angeles FC and the New England Revolution made runs at the top mark. Why does this keep happening and is Nashville really the most talented regular season of all time? WIll it make a difference once the playoffs kickoff?

We then pivot to the youth of America with the U.S. Soccer Federation absorbing U.S. Youth Soccer into its ranks. The move will take place over two years and end with U.S. Soccer fully controlling youth soccer for the first time. It’s a Friday and we are looking towards the future here on Morning Kickaround.

We start with the fun stuff and update on the USL’s first division efforts courtesy of league president Paul McDonough himself. The big man went on Tim Howard and Landon Donovan’s podcast to talk about his first division project, including the future of promotion and relegation, the pursuit of changes to U.S. Soccer’s Professional League Standards, and more.

We stay on the plus side of things with Soccer Under Construction in Phoenix. Phoenix Rising have released new renderings for a very impressive stadium with their eyes on the USL Premier League. There is also stadium news out of the southern tip of Texas as the city of Brownsville is also looking to erect a stadium and get themselves a USL franchise.

With all the good must come the bad, however. Santa Barbara Sky, the long planned USL Championship expansion side, appears to be dead on the California coast. There is also no good news coming out of the corn fields of Des Moines, Iowa.

First up today, we ask if the Premier League is holding back the growth of American soccer? The Premier League is looking to capitalize off the World Cup boom in the United States with their coast-to-coast watch parties for the opening weekend. Does this invasion from abroad come at the expense of American soccer or does the league’s self-promotion also lift American clubs? Robert and Jason discuss.

Mexico, meanwhile, is trying to move closer to its American cousins. Liga MX temporarily suspended promotion and relegation during the Covid pandemic to help save costs and is now taking steps to make that suspension permanent. Mexico’s owners are getting together to alter the governance of the league that will keep all 18 of them in the top flight forever while protecting their profit margins. Finally, we have an update on Boston Legacy’s efforts to rehabilitate White Stadium. The Massachusetts Supreme Court has cleared the way for construction to proceed at the historic stadium. The NWSL expansion club has a grand vision for the site that includes a state-of-the-art women’s soccer stadium and public access to the site for 15 hours a day, seven days a week.

Welcome to Wednesday on Morning Kickaround! Jason is enjoying the Puerto Rican sunshine, so Luke Zagorski joins Robert Kerr for this hump day edition of the show.

We open with American teenage Zavier Gozo singing with Crystal Palace in the Premier League. The Real Salt Lake wing back has six goals and five assists in MLS and is ready to take his talents to the Premier League. How does he fit in with the rest of the Americans plying their trade in England?

Next up is a controversy involving the turf at Gillette Stadium. The stadium was outfitted with a grass surface for the World Cup and the switch back to an artificial surface has been bungled a bit. The Revs played three games on turf that did not comply with the MLS’s Collective Bargaining Agreement before the problem was noticed and solved. The problem affects the NFL’s New England Patriots, so at least we know the solution will arrive in a timely manner.

Our old friend TravelFutbolFan then joins the show after the madness that was the World Cup. His quest for relaxation isn’t going well as things just keep popping up when it comes to international soccer and travelling. Looking back at what went well logistically during the World Cup takes center stage here, but they also touch on the Colombia earthquakes, the scandals surrounding Gianni Infantino, and more.

Finally, U.S. Soccer has rolled out a new talent reporter program as the federation looks to crowd source its search for young players.
