The city of South Bend has come through with American Rescue Plan funding for a former motel being used as a residential facility for homeless people. The county last month refused to authorize another round of funding for Motels4Now, which has been using the former Knights Inn on Lincolnway West, but the city is now pledging money to keep it open while they work to build a permanent facility. Over a hundred people currently using the facility will be able to stay for now.
A federal Judge says former Vice President Mike Pence must testify before a grand jury investigating former President Trump’s alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. Pence was claiming he’s shielded from having to testify by the Constitution because of his position at the time as part of the legislative branch. The judge says no, and says Trump has no standing to intervene. It's not clear whether Pence will appeal.
Researchers have developed a unique way for people with type 1 diabetes to regulate their blood sugar levels. Instead of an insulin pump, the team has developed an implantable fuel cell that uses extra blood sugar to generate electrical energy that can be used to release insulin into the blood. The existing device is only a prototype, and they’re looking for a partner to bring it to market.
