The goat will carry on itself all their iniquities into a solitary place, and the man will release it into the wilderness. — Leviticus 16:22

The scapegoat on the day of atonement is one of the richest pictures of the Gospel in the old testament. Aaron laid both hands on the goat's head, confessing all the sins of Israel, and the goat carried them away into the wilderness. This is what Jesus did for us—he became the scapegoat who bore our sins as far as the east is from the west.
